Jorah Mormont

Ser Jorah Mormont, once the proud heir of Bear Island, led a life that would carry him far from his northern home and into the turbulent courts of Essos. Born as the son of Lord Jeor Mormont, he married young, as per his father’s wish, to a woman of House Glover. Their union, though lasting a decade, brought heartache, with his wife passing after her third miscarriage. When Jeor left to take the black, Jorah inherited his lordship, thus bearing the duties of House Mormont. During Robert's Rebellion, Jorah fought for the rebels and witnessed the rebellion’s bitter end at King’s Landing. After his wife's death, Jorah accepted knighthood following his valor at Pyke during the Greyjoy Rebellion, where he distinguished himself by leading an assault in the siege. In recognition, King Robert I Baratheon knighted him, and soon Jorah's name spread across the realm.

At a tourney celebrating the victory over the Greyjoys, Jorah’s life took a dramatic turn upon meeting Lynesse Hightower. Enamored with her beauty, he won her hand through victory in the lists, but her lavish tastes soon led him into financial ruin. Attempting to recreate the opulence of House Hightower on the stark Bear Island, Jorah fell deeply into debt. When his funds were exhausted, desperation drove him to sell poachers to a slaver—a crime that soon reached Lord Eddard Stark's ears. Rather than face Stark's judgment, Jorah fled his homeland, abandoning his ancestral sword, Longclaw, as a token of remorse. Jorah and Lynesse escaped to Lys, where his money quickly ran dry, and Lynesse left him for a wealthy merchant. Heartbroken and disgraced, Jorah wandered the Free Cities, eventually becoming a sellsword and learning the ways of the Dothraki. In time, he joined the service of Lord Varys as a spy, watching over the Targaryen exiles. Known as “Jorah the Andal” among the Dothraki, he became a haunted man, forever bound to his exile by love, debt, and the shadow of his former honor.
